VeteranNick Mirkes

Nick Mirkes, 87, of Stillwater, Okla., died April 19, 2013, at Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He was born May 25, 1925, in Hennessey, a son of John and Emma Rothermel Mirkes. He married Rosalie Iven on June 1, 1949, in Hennessey. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jim (and Kay) Mirkes of Plano, Texas, and Keith (and Rita Veal) Mirkes of Stillwater; two daughters, Brenda (and Gary) Tripp of Stillwater and Diane (and John) Schutte of Edmond; three sisters, Lucy Turner of Huntsville, Ala., Rita O'Hern of Macomb and Rosanne Bagniefski of LaCrosse, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother; and one great-grandchild.

He attended Myrtle Grade School for eight years and graduated from Hennessey High School in 1946.

He served with the U.S. Navy as Aviation Machinist Mate 3rd Class for 23 months.

Nick and his brother, John, custom built homes in the Hennessey area for years. He also farmed in the Hennessey and Marshall areas for 50 years.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hennessey, Okla., and St. Joseph's Men's Club.

Services were held April 21 at his church. Mass of Christian Burial was held April 22 at his church with Archbishop Emeritus Beltran, Rev. Joseph Arledge and Rev. Roberto Quant officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made in his name to Autism Speaks, with the funeral home serving as custodian of the funds.
