Clara Miller

Clara B. Miller, 97, of Winterset, Iowa, formerly of Astoria, died on Sunday, Dec. 15, 1996, in the Winterset Care Center North where she had resided for almost a year.

She was born on a farm near Astoria on June 30, 1899, a daughter of David and Rosa May Brooks Lind. She joined the Church of the Brethren at age 10 and remained with this denomination until her death. She moved to Iowa in 1923, back to Illinois in 1937, and then to Iowa in 1961.

On July 19, 1919, she married Bill Gibble. They had one daughter, Verna Maxine. On. Feb. 14, 1962, Clara married Erwin Miller in Iowa. Both husbands and daughter are deceased.

Survivors include six grandchildren, John Whitney of Atlantic, Iowa, Bradford Whitney of Eldridge, Iowa, Alan Whitney of Bullhead City, Ariz., Beverly Bircher of Winterset, Iowa, Sue Hartwigsen of DeSoto, Iowa, Rose Tulla of Omaha, Neb.; 19 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; three nieces; and two nephews.

Clara is the last of 17 children born to her father, David Lind. He first married Mary Fitz to which 14 children were born. Later he married Rosa May Brooks, to which three children were born, Mabel Harman, Ernest Lind and Clara, all deceased.

Funeral services were held Dec. 19, in the Earlham Church of Earlham, Iowa, with Pastor Larry Rush officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery, Madrid, Iowa.
