Bessie Lau

Bessie Lau, 94, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Astoria, died at 12:55 a.m. Feb. 11, 2010, in Scottsdale.

She was born Nov. 17, 1915, in Springfield, a daughter of Newton and Jane Harriss Pettitt. She married Howard “Happy” Lau in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1958.

She also was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Billy Lau; two brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are two daughters, Patty (and Phill) Patrick of Chatham and Lonnie (and Ed) Weinstein of Scottsdale; one son, Larry (and Susan) Lau of East Peoria; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She worked at Ken-Ray Foundry in Vermont until 1961. She then went to beauty school and operated the Town and Country Beauty Salon in Astoria until she moved to Arizona in 1970. In Arizona, she owned and operated the Styleline Beauty Salon. She also managed an apartment complex in Scottsdale.

She was a member of Scottsdale Christian Church.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Services will be held at a later date.
