Evelyn Hopping

Evelyn A. Hopping, 83, of Washington, Ill., died at 7:05 a.m. July 5, 2012, at Rosewood Care Center of East Peoria.

She was born Sept. 14, 1928, in Browning, a daughter of Lester and Helen Lau Shaw. She married Loyd Robert Surratt on April 8, 1950, in Lewistown. He preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 1960. She later married Otis Blaine Hopping on Sept. 4, 1970, in Astoria. He preceded her in death on March 18, 1997.

She also was preceded in death by one sister, Harriett Schomer.

Surviving are one daughter, Beverly Lee of Canton; one son, Steven Surratt of East Peoria; two brothers, Willis (and Irene) Shaw and Bud Shaw, both of Astoria; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She worked in housekeeping. She also worked at the Dairy Dipper and Coin Wash in Astoria, Hamm's Grocery Store in Bluff City and in child care.

She was a member of First Church of the Brethren in Peoria and a former member of Sheldons Grove Ladies Aid.

Services were held Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Dana McNeil officiating. Burial was in Sheldons Grove Cemetery in Browning.
