Martha Harlacher Dies In Iowa

Mrs. Martha Harlacher, 96, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 1980, in the Pleasant View Home in Kalona, Ia. where she had resided the past eight years.

She was born Apr. 13, 1884, near Astoria, a daughter of David and Mary Fitz Lind. On Apr. 4, 1909, she was married to John Harlacher in Idaho. He died in September, 1956.

On Jan. 28, 1896, she was baptized in Abe Lind’s pond by Elder Michael Flory. The thick ice had to be cut so that she could be baptized. Her home church was always Woodland.

On Oct. 31, 1907, she left Astoria with John and Ida Lind for Spokane, Wash. She also lived in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Iowa.

She moved to Kinross, Ia. after the death of her husband to make her home with her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan (Mary) Gibson.

Survivors include a son, Russell Harlacher of Central Point, Ore.; a daughter, Mary Gibson of Kinross, Ia.; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two half-sisters, Mrs. Mabel Harman of Industry and Mrs. Clara Miller of Perry, Ia.

Preceding her in death were her husband; one infant daughter, Katherine; three sisters, Franey Clannin, Susan Lind and Sarah (Sadie) Rudisill; seven brothers, Jacob, John, Solomon, Noah, Jesse, James and Ernest Lind; and four infants.

Funeral services were held Aug. 1 in the English River Church of the Brethren with Rev. James Albright officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Martha will be remembered in her church by her never tiring work in quilting.
