EMANUEL HOKE

Emanuel Hoke

Herald: After months of sickness from stomach and heart trouble, Emanuel Hoke, one of the most widely known citizens of Farmers township, departed this life Saturday, June 14, 1913 at his home 1-1/2 miles northwest of Bernadotte.

Funeral services were held at Temple Monday afternoon, Rev. E. A. Carey, pastor of the Christian church, officiating. The male quartette of the same church — W. L. Hipsley, Q. D. Baily, Dr. F. A. Hainline and Everett Hammond — furnished the vocal music. Interment in Temple cemetery was in charge of the Masonic lodges of Table Grove and Ipava.

Emanuel Hoke was born in York county, Penn., October 7, 1848, and lived to the age of 64 years, 8 months and 7 days. He left his home in Pennsylvania and came to Fulton county, Ill., in 1871. December 24, 1871, he was married to Isabelle Kling, who departed this life August 19, 1883. To this union were born 7 children, Alice, Leah, Fairy, Lucy, Nellie, Annie and Harry, all surviving their parents.

January 3, 1884, he was married to Alice Jane Lau, and to them were born 7 children, two of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are Ida, Ross, Martha, Gertrude and Amanda. He therefore leaves a wife, twelve children, also four brothers, three sisters and a host of friends to mourn his death.

Mr. Hoke was of good, sturdy Pennsylvania Dutch stock, thrifty and full of energy. A Democrat in politics, he was a party worker in the best sense of the term, never neglecting a political or civic duty. He held many township offices and discharged the duties of each intelligently and with fidelity to the interests of the whole township. He was one of the promoters of the once famous Hawthorn Grange fair and to its support gave freely his time, money and work, and was a liberal contributor to many other worthy causes. He was a good husband and father, a splendid and accommodating neighbor, and in his death Farmers township loses one of its best citizens. He was reasonably successful in the business of farming and provided well for those dependent upon his labor and management.
