NELDA MAXINE (RHOADES) EIKENBERRY

Nelda Eikenberry

Nelda M. Eikenberry, 84, of Astoria died at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Feb. 1, 1916, in Astoria, a daughter of Paul J. and Orpha M. Benton Rhoades. She married Lorrel S. Eikenberry on June 8, 1941, in Astoria. He survives.

Also surviving are one son, James (and Susan) of Lancaster, Pa.; one daughter, Paula (and Ken) Langdon of Mentor, Ohio; two brothers, J. Benton (and Doris) Rhoades of Claremont, Calif., and Robert (and Betty) Rhoades of DeKalb; one sister, Marianne (and Robert) Pittman of Blacksburg, Va.; and four grandsons.

One infant sister preceded her in death.

A member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, she was a medical technologist and was the dean of the College of Medical Technology at St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford. She also was an adjunct college faculty member at universities and colleges throughout Illinois.

She formerly served as head of the Northern Illinois Blood Blank.

She was traveling Christian education consultant. She also was an inner city children and youth recreation leader in Rockford.

She was a member of Astoria Christian Church, Woodland Church of the Brethren in Astoria and the Astoria Sunshine Club.

Services were held Saturday at Astoria Christian Church with Gary Sheets officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Spoon River Hospice at Graham Hospital in Canton.
