VERNA (STAMBAUGH) DUKE

Verna Duke

Verna Duke, 90, of Liberty, Ind., died at her residence on Saturday evening, July 26, 1997.

She was born Nov. 17, 1906, near Ipava, a daughter of George and Fannie Bucher Stambaugh. She married Ralph Duke on May 27, 1939. He died in 1989.

Surviving are one son, Karl E. Duke of Mountain View, Mo.; one daughter, Beverly Deilkes of Liberty, Ind.; one brother, Mark Stambaugh of Shelbina, Mo.; three sisters, Mabel Bowman of Canton, Faith Blair of London, Ohio, and Georgia Lee Page, Springfield; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was a graduate of Astoria High School and was a Home Economics major, graduating from North Manchester College. She had lived in the Liberty area since 1936 and taught five years in Elkhart County, Ind. Prior to that she taught two years in Boston, Ind., one year in Orleans, Ind., and one year in Rush County, Ind. She then went home to the farm to live as a farm wife.

Services were conducted last Wednesday at the Showalter-Blackwell Baker Foskick Chapel in Liberty with Rev. Calvin Cheek officiating. Rev. Cheek is a retired minister of the Four Mile Church of the Brethren where Verna taught Sunday School classes. Burial was in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, Boston, Ind.
