Maurice CoxMaurice F. Cox, 83, of Vermont died at 8:58 p.m. May 23, 2019, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

He was born Feb. 11, 1936, at the family farm west of Vermont, a son of Arthur and Twila Ruth Cox. He married Kathy Cozadd on Sept. 11, 1961, in Summum. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Laura (and Mike) Seamster of Hopewell, Marisa (and Jerry) Nutt of Greensboro, N.C., and Jody (and Eric) Trone of Elmwood; two sisters, Maxine Leezer of Canton and Cheryl (and Gary) Matteson of Vermont; two brothers, Marcus (and Frances) Cox of Cuba and George (and Natalie) Cox of Lewistown; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Max Cox.

He was a rural mail carrier and a bus driver.

He served in the United States Army from 1959-61. In the service, he was a postman and even delivered a letter addressed to Elvis Presley while he was in Germany.

He was a member of Vermont Christian Church, where he served at several positions including elder, deacon and was chairman of the church board when the family life addition of the church was built. He also was a member of O.D.D. Fellows Vermont Lodge, where he served as Noble Grand. He volunteered for Hospice and the American Legion Color Guard. He was a Scout Master.

In high school, he received the SAR Award.

Services were held Tuesday at his church with Pastor Cody Stinnett and Pastor Tim Gilliland officiating. Burial was in Vermont Cemetery. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
