Dr. Gary CounselmanDr. Gary L. Counselman, 69, of Topeka, Kan., formerly of Vermont, died Oct. 6, 2014, at Midland Hospice House.

He was born April 14, 1945, in Macomb, a son of Guy E. and June Bucy Counselman-McCormick. He married Lou Ellen Bruning on Nov. 4, 1972, in Hiawatha, Kan. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Angela (and Chris) Dow of Tulsa, Okla.; two sons, Dr. Brett Counselman and Thad Counselman, both of Topeka; one sister, Tammie McCormick-Blindt of Vermont; and one brother, Brian McCormick of Vermont; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father and stepfather, Hale McCormick; and one brother, Ed Counselman.

He graduated from VIT High School, and Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa, with a doctor of chiropractic degree in 1968.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1968-71.

He practiced in Topeka for 42 years. He partnered with Dr. Dennis Wade for the past 30-plus years, and his son Dr. Brett Counselman joined the practice eight years ago.

He was a member of First Assembly of God Church.

He was a member of Kansas Chiropractic Association since 1972 and served on numerous committees and boards. He was a member of Kansas State Board of Healing Arts since 2003, served as vice president from 2010-11 and president from 2011-12. He was named KCA Doctor of the Year in 1989. He also was a member of High Country Chiropractic Knights of the Round Table since July 2000; and a Fellow with International College of Chiropractors, Inc., since October 2000.

Services were held Friday at his church. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Pennwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory in Topeka was in charge of arrangements.
