Frank Beck, Jr. Dies At Age 62

Frank Beck Jr., 62, of Astoria, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1980, at 1 a.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria from injuries sustained at his job as groundman on the shovel at Freeman United Electric Buckheart Mine near Canton early Sunday morning, Dec. 14.

He was born June 1, 1918 in Novinger, Mo., a son of Frank Sr. and Lucy Donnolly Beck. He married Katherine Bayles on May 4, 1967 in Edwardsville. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Beverly Hamm of Ipava and Mrs. Kay Dutton of Vermont; one son, Barry Beck of Astoria; one stepson, George Humphrey of Aledo; ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ina May Reynolds of Astoria and Mrs. Helen Cordell of Colchester; three brothers, Henry “Percy” of Bunceton, Mo., Luther Harold of Canton and Robert of St. Louis.

He was a member of the Baptist Church of Novinger, Mo.; a member of Union Local 7455 of the United Mine Workers of America, the Astoria Saddle Club and had been Fire Chief of the Astoria Volunteer Fire Department for several years. He was a horseshoer in the local area for several years where he made many friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon at Kost Memorial Home in Vermont with Rev. Bruce Weiman officiating. Burial was in the Astoria Cemetery.
