James E. Briney Of Bluff City Died Suddenly Thursday

James E. Briney, well known in Astoria and community, died suddenly following a stroke of paralysis at his home in Bluff City Thursday afternoon at about 6:00 o’clock.

Mr. Briney was born January 12, 1857 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of Edward R. and Catharine Cunningham Briney. He came to Illinois when nine years old and has spent the remainder of his life in and around Bluff City.

Jas. E. Briney was married to Caroline Weddle, December 25, 1881, she having preceded him in death sixteen years ago. To this union ten children were born of which three are deceased. Those surviving are: Bessie Troth and Mrs. Gertrude Priebe of Chicago, LeRoy of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Edward of Crook, Col., John of Bluff City, James of Beardstown and Grover of Rushville. There are 27 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He has one living sister, Mrs. Sybil Day of Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Briney was a member of the K. of P. Lodge, who had charge of the services at the grave and also acted as pallbearers.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock by Rev. W. H. Day. Burial in cemetery nearby.
