HATTIE SUE “SUSIE” (WHERLEY) WILKENS

Hattie Sue "Susie" Wilkens, 80, of Powell, Wyo., formerly of Astoria, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at Powell Nursing Home in Powell.

She was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Macomb, the daughter of John A. and Bonnie B. Curless Wherley. She married Gerald Wilkens on Sept. 8, 1944, in California. He survives.

Also surviving are one son, Gerry (and Pat) of Salt Lake City; three daughters, Sallie Wentz of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Nancy (and Dick) Hargrove and Teri Ann (and Paul) Drake, both of Helena, Mont.; one brother, John (and Lois) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She and her husband owned and operated Wilkens Jewelry in Astoria from 1945 to 1952. They then moved to Casper, Wyo., where they managed the John Triponey Jewelry Store for three years. They later bought Shelby Jewelry in Powell in 1955 and in 1972 purchased a department store, which she managed.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 226, in Ipava.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, where visitation will be two hours before. Gary Sheets will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Powell Nursing Home.
