John A. Wherley Of Canton Dies

John A. Wherley, 91, of 34 Martin Ave., Canton, former Astoria area resident, died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 1988, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 29, 1896, in Astoria, a son of Edward and Susie Burgard Wherley. He married Bonnie Curless on Sept. 15, 1917, in Canton, Mo. She died Sept. 30, 1965. He also was preceded in death by six brothers.

Surviving are one son, Philip Wherley of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one daughter, Hattie Sue Wilkins of Powell, Wyo.; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

He was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Astoria. He was formerly a cattle buyer and worked for Peoria Producers. He was a 70-year member of Morningstar Lodge 734.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home with Rev. Merlyn Bowman officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery near Astoria.

Masonic services were held at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the memorial home.
