VeteranR. W. Wherley Dies In Luzon

Pfc. Russell W. Wherley was killed on Luzon, Jan. 29, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Wherley, residing southeast of Astoria.

Russell was born at the family home near Astoria, Nov. 1, 1921. Completing grade school at Hickory, near his home, he received the scholarship award for his township when he graduated.

He was a member of the Astoria Church of the Brethren and was engaged in farming with his father prior to his induction in the armed forces on Oct. 17, 1942.

He was stationed at Fort Bragg, N. C., and Camp Roberts, Calif. for his training.

Pfc. Wherley was sent overseas in August, 1943 and served on New Hebredes and Solomon Islands until early in January of this year when he was sent to the Philippines. He had been awarded the combat infantry badge for exemplary conduct in combat against the Japanese. He had never had a furlough.

Pfc. Wherley is survived by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Norma Lee Warner, his fiancee, Miss Lydia Dohner of Vermont, his aged grandfather, Rev. C. A. Gruber and many other relatives and friends.
