Steve ThomasStephan J. “Steve” Thomas, 64, of Astoria died at 1:20 p.m. June 1, 2018, at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield.

He was born Sept. 6, 1953, in Beardstown, a son of Willard “Pill” and Doris McCombs Thomas. He married Laura Rigg on June 21, 1975, in Ashland. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Brandon Thomas of Astoria; one daughter, Shaunea L. (and fiancé Gary Nichols) Miller of Astoria; his mother, Doris Thomas of Astoria; one brother, David (and Ruth) Thomas of Lewistown; one sister, Teresa (and Doug) Knigge of Stoutsville, Mo.; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willard “Pill” Thomas.

He graduated from Astoria High School and became a barber in the early 1970s. He later worked for Caterpillar until he became disabled in 1989 with heart trouble. He was an umpire for several years and also coached boys baseball and fifth-grade girls softball. He ran the game clock for football, girls and boys basketball and some baseball.

He was a member of Bader Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Pastor Brandon Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Bader Cemetery.
