Lynn SmithLynn D. Smith, 79, of Rushville died at 9:25 p.m. July 27, 2015, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born March 29, 1936, in Farmers Township, Fulton County, a son of Charles D. and Lillie Woodford Smith. He married Donna Burmood on July 26, 1964, in Knoxville. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Kendall (and Sherry) Smith of Gurnee and Christopher (and Kristin) Smith of Chicago; two brothers, Ivan Smith and Stanley (and Barbara) Smith, both of Rushville; two sisters, Joyce Chaplin of Walled Lake, Mich., and Barbara (and Robert) Spencer of Beardstown; and four grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Vietnam Era. He was stationed under the ice cap in the Arctic Circle. After his military service, he was a member of the Operating Engineers for 61 years.

He worked for S. W. Hardwick in Beardstown, before becoming elected as the Buena Vista Highway Commissioner, retiring in 1999 after 32 years of service. He then began L.D. Smith and Sons Excavating.

He served as mayor of Rushville from 1999 to 2003. During this time, he was instrumental in developing the back nine holes at Scripps Park Golf Course, establishing Wilson Street and the Rushville Business Park. He was currently serving on the Schuyler County Board.

He was a member of the Route 67 Corridor Committee; Two Rivers Regional Council of Public Officials; West Central Mass Transit District; Rushville Rotary Club, where he served as president; and was involved in building the Scripps Park shelter, restroom and constructed picnic tables; Schuyler American Legion Post #4; and the AMVETS in Beardstown. He volunteered his time for many community projects including Habitat for Humanity.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Mr. David Haney officiating. Burial will follow in the Rushville City Cemetery with military rites by the U.S. Army Honors Burial Detail and the Schuyler American Legion Post #4. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
