Howard StambaughHoward H. Stambaugh, 91, of Astoria died at 5:50 p.m. April 9, 2014, at Snyder’s Vaughn-Haven Nursing Home in Rushville.

He was born Aug. 13, 1922, in Sheldons Grove, a son of Leonard and Maye Edith Carter Stambaugh. He married Betty Porter on Oct. 9, 1948, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are one sister, Patty Winner of Browning; two nieces, Barbara (and Scott) Harris of Browning and Karen (and Gary Smith) Lowe of Glasford; and two nephews, Aaron (and Laura) Winner of Rushville and Alvin (and Vonda Smith) Winner of Browning.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Stambaugh.

He was a farm hand. He then was a custodian at Browning Grade School for many years.

He was an U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1943-45 in Company B, 114th Infantry, 44th Division with a rank of Private First Class.

Services were held Tuesday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Chaplain Bob Spencer officiating. Military rites were provided by Astoria American Legion Post #25. Cremation rites will be accorded. Burial will be in Sheldons Grove Cemetery in Browning at a later date.
