Marshall L. Shields, 77, of Astoria died at 11:50 a.m. Oct. 21, 2006, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

He was born July 9, 1929, at Pleasant Township, Fulton County, the son of Theodore R. and Stella G. Trone Shields. He married Marietta Grafton on Dec. 24, 1949, in Astoria. She died Jan. 25, 1996.

Surviving are three daughters, Marsha (and Albert) Bucher and Marlena (and Phil) Poppenhager, both of Astoria and Marcia (and Richard) Chambers of Lewistown; one son, Martin (and Kathy) Shields of Astoria; two sisters, Eunice Welker of Astoria and Norma (and Robert) Shawgo of Ipava; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was in the Army from 1952 to 1953, serving in Germany in the 6th Armored Division.

He farmed in the Astoria area his entire life. He also worked for International Harvester in Canton for nine years and was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years.

He was a member of Astoria American Legion Post #25, National Rural Mail Carriers Association, National Rifle Association and Fulton County Farm Bureau.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Summum Cemetery with Pastor Guy Taylor officiating. Military rites will be accorded by Astoria American Legion Post #25. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
