Charles R. "Chuck" Smith, 77, of Macomb, formerly of Ipava, died at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born May 15, 1928, in Beardstown, a son of John and Nellie Scherrer Smith. He married Donna Dixon on June 14, 1951, in Lewistown.

He later married Verna Morrison on Feb. 14, 1979. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Becky Morris of DuQuoin; two stepsons, Eldon Morrison of Macomb and Bill (and Barbara) Morrison of Lorraine; one stepdaughter, Sandra (and John) Ziegler of Wadsworth, Nev.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack of Lewistown; and two sisters, Peg (and Harold) Spencer of Summum and Pat (and Lucien) Smith of Lewistown.

A Korean War Army veteran, he served in Company B, 1905th Engineer Aviation Battalion. He was a member and past commander of Ipava American Legion Post 17. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

A coal miner, he was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1131.

He was a member of Ipava United Presbyterian Church.

Services were held Saturday at Lewistown United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Kessler officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown, where military honors were accorded by his American Legion post.
