Phillip Dayle Stambaugh, 76, of Astoria died at 11 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, in the emergency room at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

He was born July 27, 1926, in Astoria, a son of John W. and Mabel Shaeffer Stambaugh. He married Catherine Cooper on Nov. 22, 1946, in Beardstown. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Rita (and Larry) Cunningham of Vermont; one sister, Lois Shawgo of Springfield; two granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, V.J. (Buck), Willard Dean, Willis, an infant; and an infant sister.

He was a World War II Navy Veteran.

He was a brakeman, switchman and fireman for the CB&Q and Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring in 1986.

He also farmed until retiring in 1991.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, where visitation will be one hour before. Rev. Clifford Parry will officiate. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Astoria Rescue Squad.
