Loka Schmoldt

Loka Kost Schmoldt, 99, of Beardstown, died Thursday morning, June 1, 1995, at St. Luke Health Care Center in Beardstown.

She was born Nov. 9, 1895 in Vermont, a daughter of Stephen A. and Lucinda Horwedel Kost. She married Ernest James Schmoldt Aug. 21, 1926 in Virginia. He preceded her in death May 3, 1963.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews and long time friend, companion and employee for 33 years, Mary Lou Malcomson of Rushville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Ned, Zeb, and John, and four sisters, Maud, Cassie, Mary and Eva.

Mrs. Schmoldt moved to Lewistown with her family when she was small and attended school there where she was a member of the class of 1913. She moved with her family to Beardstown in 1917. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown where she formerly was president of the Ladies Aid Society and served as a Sunday School teacher. She was formerly a member of the Beardstown Women’s Club where she served as recording secretary for several years. She was also a former member of the Beardstown Garden Club. She and her husband owned and operated Schmolt Lumber in Beardstown for many years before selling the business to L. K. Vredenburgh. Mrs. Schmoldt served on the Schmitt Memorial Hospital board in Beardstown for several years and also elected as the first president of the Hospital Auxiliary. She wrote poetry and and had a small collection of her poems published. Mrs. Schmolt loved children and served as a 4-H leader in Beardstown. She also donated funds in 1970 to the Beardstown Park District to upgrade a public park now known as Schmoldt Memorial Park in Beardstown.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with Rev. Pam Gonzales officiating.

Burial was in the Beardstown City Cemetery.
