Roy C. Stremmel, 91, of Beardstown, died at 10:35 a.m. Monday, Apr. 1, 1985, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
He was born Oct. 27, 1893, in Fulton County, a son of Adam and Sarah Hamm Stremmel. He married Minnie May Thornton on Apr. 23, 1918. She died Sept. 17, 1972.
Survivors include three daughters, Maxine Holtman of Beardstown, Allyne Shawgo of Oakford, Mildred Phelps of rural Beardstown; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great, great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Vaughn of Vermont.
He started his working career as a cattle farmer and later worked for the C.B.&Q. Railroad for 32 years as a switchman until his retirement in 1959.
He served with the United States Army Infantry in France during World War I. He was a member and past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Beardstown. He was a 63-year member of the Cass County Masonic Lodge No. 23 AF&AM.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cline Funeral Home in Beardstown with Rev. Ronald Beaty of Jacksonville officiating. Burial will be in the Beardstown City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home with Masonic services at 8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Golden Age Senior Citizens Center of Beardstown.
