Richard Eugene Root, 65, of rural Browning died at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 6, 1938, in Bainbridge Township, Schuyler County, a son of John Wilber and Sarah Elizabeth Robeson Root.

Surviving are two sons, Mike (and Helen) of Browning and John (and Shelly) of Rushville; two daughters, Angel (and Donnie) Vaughn of Rushville and Chris Holmes of Havana; his mother of Rushville; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Harold of Beardstown and John, William and Neil, all of Rushville; and one sister, Rita Carroll of Beardstown.

He was preceded in death by his father.

An Army veteran, he served from 1962 to 1964.

He had been a welder at Sun Spot Coal Mine in Vermont, and a self-employed mechanic and heavy equipment operator until retiring.

Cremation has been accorded. Graveside services and burial of ashes will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Rushville City Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Bonser officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville. Military rites will be accorded by Schuyler American Legion Post 4.
