Melba Phillips

Melba PhillipsMelba D. Phillips, 84, of Ray died at 5:50 a.m. Nov. 16, 2011, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born Feb. 11, 1927, a daughter of Guy and Grace Potter Curtis at the home place where she resided most of her married life in Ray. She married Verne Dwight Phillips on April 11, 1948, in Palmyra, Mo. He preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 2006.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Lyle Edward Curtis, William Eugene "Gene" Curtis and Donald Curtis; and four sisters, Lura Tomlinson, Leona Ford, Marjorie Sayer and Madeline Ogden.

Surviving are one daughter, Barbara (and Bill) Campbell of Beardstown; one son, Danny D. (and Carol) Phillips of Rushville; one sister, Carol Briney of Indianapolis, Ind.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was a welder at Astoria Fibra-Steel and attended Ray Community Church.

Services were held Saturday at Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville with Mark and Patty Prather officiating. Burial was in Rushville City Cemetery.
