Lawrence "Jake" McCombsLawrence E. “Jake” McCombs, 93, of Astoria died at 4:30 p.m. June 20, 2020, at Renaissance Care Center in Canton.

He was born April 25, 1927, in Bader, a son of Edward and Alma Trone McCombs. He married Estyl Gunter on Nov. 1, 1989, in Astoria. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Jeff (and Brandi) McCombs of Peoria; one daughter, Pam McCombs of Peoria; four stepsons, Dan (and Bonnie) Gunter of Havana, Tim Gunter of Roseville, Tom Gunter of West Peoria and Jim (and Tammy) Gunter of Alexis; one brother, Robert Lee “Jake” McCombs of Astoria; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Erma Easley.

He drove a feed truck after returning from the Navy. He then went on to work for the State of Illinois Highway Department. He retired in 1989 from Caterpillar Tractor Company in Mossville.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabees in World War II and the Korean War.

He was a member of Astoria American Legion for over 70 years.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Astoria Cemetery with Pastor Matthew Thiner officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Astoria American Legion Post #25. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria is in charge of arrangements.
