Nelson E. Madtson Sr., 93, of Ipava died at 9:50 p.m. April 7, 2020, at his home.
He was born Oct. 10, 1926, in Ipava, the son of Nels Edward and Marguerite Ashcraft Madtson. He married Charlita Jo Williams on June 10, 1950, in Havana. She preceded him in death on April 24, 2007.
He also was preceded in death by one grandson, Dennis Jordan Madtson; and one sister, Margaret Parkinson.
Surviving are one son, Nelson Edward (and Linda) Madtson Jr. of Canton; two daughters, Mary Jo Havens of Ipava and Catherine Havens of Marietta; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He retired from Caterpillar as a machinist. He also was a gunsmith for Madtson & Son Gunsmiths, where he worked with his dad and later his son.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1945-46.
He was a member of the Ipava American Legion, UAW Labors Union and the NRA.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the service will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria was in charge of arrangements.
