Gary "Ike" MathisGary A. “Ike” Mathis, 71, of Rushville died at 10:45 a.m. Sept. 30, 2017, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 15, 1945, in Woodstock Township, Schuyler County, Illinois, a son of Lyle and Verna Hopping Mathis. He married Melissa Coffman on July 27, 1968, in Stonington. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Luke (and Sadie) Mathis of Divernon and Josh Mathis of Rushville; two daughters, Beth Oeser and Lori (and Matthew) Prather, both of Rushville; two sisters, Hazel Geer of Tucson, Ariz., and Edie (and Terry) Buckalew of Browning; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Andrew Allen Mathis; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Mathis; one brother, Kenneth “Shorty” Mathis; and one grandchild, Clayton Ward.

He graduated from Rushville High School with the class of 1963. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68. He was an independent logger until 1994. He then worked maintenance at L & N Industries for 19 years until retiring in 2013.

A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Rose Catholic Church in Rushville with Father Adam Stimpson officiating. Burial followed in Browning Cemetery with military honors by Schuyler American Legion Post #4 and an Army Honors detail. Worthington Funeral Home in Rushville was in charge of arrangements.
