Whitney Mercer

Whitney MercerWhitney O. Mercer, 86, of Vermont died at 11:48 a.m. Nov. 24, 2014, at The Elms in Macomb.

He was born April 21, 1928, in Galesburg, a son of C.C. and Katherine Whitney Mercer. He married Muriel Rhodes. She preceded him in death.

He also was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Dave Mercer.

Surviving are one daughter, Jeanette Walters of Astoria; one son, Bruce (and Anita) Mercer of Vermont; one sister, Martha Jane Miller of Vermont; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one step grandchild.

He worked for Ken-Ray Brass Foundry in Vermont for 22 years, ran a junk yard for 20 years, and was the last “ice man” in Vermont, delivering ice and coal to area residents.

He was a member of Astoria Church of Christ.

Services will be held at noon Saturday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the memorial home. Cremation rites will be accorded after the services.
