JOHN A. MACFARLANE

Rural Astoria Man, 23, Killed In 1-Car Crash

A rural Astoria man was killed Friday night, Dec. 19, 1980, in a one-car crash in the 1600 block of North Main street in Canton.

John A. MacFarlane, 23, suffered severe chest injuries, according to Fulton County Coroner Jim Keefauver.

Canton police said MacFarlane’s car left the highway about 10:20 p.m., struck two concrete culverts, plowed through several ditches and drove over some terraces before stopping about 200 feet later.

Police believed MacFarlane was involved in an earlier collision Friday on North Avenue A, but did not stop after his auto struck a parked car.

Dearl Rose, head of the traffic unit of the police department, said MacFarlane had passed another car on North Main when his own vehicle went out of control.

An inquest will be scheduled, Keefauver said.

Born Nov. 27, 1957, in California, a son of Lucius and Rose Marie Lange MacFarlane, he married Melanie Moose May 13, 1980, in Lewistown.

Surviving are his wife; his father of California; his step-parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kucera of Astoria; two sisters, Mrs. Linda Beach of Eugene, Ore., and Mrs. Penny Sojack of Hawthorne, Calif.; and two brothers, Robert and David, both of California.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Chuck Clark officiating. Burial was in Astoria Cemetery.
