Merle L. “Tater” Lewis, 74, of Summum, formerly of Abingdon, died at 7:07 a.m. Monday, June 8, 1998, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born Sept. 17, 1923, in Galesburg, a son of Noble and Rachael Mae Courson Lewis. He married Harriet L. Brooks on May 21, 1951, in Galesburg. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Jerry Lewis of Simms, Mont., Bob Brooks of Dahinda and Sam Lewis of Summum; three daughters, Beverly Chidester of Fairmont, Ind., and Annie Stambaugh and Chris Wall, both of Astoria; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.

He served in the Army Special Forces during World War II. He retired from International Harvester in 1983 after 30 years of service.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Rev. Tim Worstell officiating. Visitation wil be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Summum Cemetery.
