Nick Long

Nick Long, 100, of rural Beardstown, died Monday, May 13, 1996, at Heritage Manor East in Beardstown.

He was born Nov. 19, 1895, in Burlington, Iowa, a son of Bernhardt and Anna Deufel Long. He married Nettie Bell on Dec. 12, 1917, in Burlington, Iowa. She died Feb. 5, 1939. He later married Margaret Cobbs on Aug. 18, 1940, in Beardstown. She died Aug. 30, 1992. He was also preceded in death by one son, Robert, two sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Alice Lebkuecher of rural Beardstown, who cared for him; one granddaughter, Carolyn Cripe of Astoria; two grandsons, John Robert Long of Jacksonville and Chuck Lebkeucher of Edwardsville; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

He moved from Burlington to Beardstown to work for the CB&Q Railroad. He later owned and operated a Standard Oil Station at Arenzville Road near Beardstown, until 1942. He then became deputy sheriff and was later elected sheriff of Cass County. In 1950, he became a salesman for Modern Chevrolet in Beardstown, until he retired in 1968. He was a lifelong Democrat and an avid Chicago Cub fan. He was a member of Virginia Lodge 544, AF&AM, and the BPO Elks Lodge 1007 in Beardstown. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beardstown.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with Rev. Michael Massa officiating. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will meet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Masonic rites will be held at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Beardstown Citiy Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to his church or the Elks Crippled Children Fund.
