Gladys KirkbrideGladys L. Kirkbride, 99, of Vermont died at 10:50 p.m. July 27, 2008, at Astoria Gardens & Rehab Center.

She was born June 24, 1909, in McDonough County, the daughter of George and Constance Kelly Horwedel. She married Henry Kirkbride who preceded her in death on April 29, 1965.

She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Richard and Clare Horwedel.

Surviving are one son, Charles (and Charlene) Kirkbride of Vermont; one daughter, Connie Kennedy of Havana; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Vermont High School in 1928.

She was a farm wife and worked as a clerk at Miller Grocery, Nielsen Grocery and Markley Grocery stores in Astoria. She also was the custodian at Eldorado School. She worked as a CNA at Elms Nursing Home in Macomb, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Vermont United Methodist Church and later attended Church of Christ in Browning. She was one of the women who began the traveling breakfast club.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. John Ruppel officiating. Burial will follow in Vermont Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
