VeteranWilliam Hickle, Mayor Of Astoria, Dies

William "Bill" HickleWilliam A. Hickle, 61, of Astoria, died at 12:25 a.m. Monday, March 21, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 10, 1944, in Macomb, a son of William H. and Virginia Mae Hoyt Hickle. He married Lynette Shughart on Nov. 26, 1965, in Macomb. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Devin (and Laura) of Astoria; one daughter, Gwen (and Rob) Hillyer of Rushville; and three grandchildren.

A Vietnam War Navy veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 25.

He was also a member of Astoria Lions Club, and a charter member of Argyle Lake Antique Gas Engine Association.

He served as Scoutmaster of Astoria Boy Scout Troop #105 for 15 years.

He was a member of the Astoria 4th of July Committee.

He worked for more than 30 years in the water conditioning business working for Culligan in Macomb and Cesco Soft Water Service in Ipava.

He was a tender for four years at Lewistown Ag in Lewistown.

He was a pyrotechnician for J&M Displays in Yarmouth, Iowa, for 13 years.

He served on the Astoria Village Board and was currently serving as mayor of the village of Astoria.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria, where visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Gary Sheets will officiate.

Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery, with military rites accorded by Astoria American Legion Post 25.

Memorials may be made to Astoria 4th of July Committee.
