Loren "Red" HowellLoren D. "Red" Howell, 60, of Astoria died at 6:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at his residence.

He was born March 10, 1942, in Havana, a son of Henry and Gladys Mason Howell. He married Sandra Danner Cox on Jan. 10, 1970, in Havana. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Connie Gunter of Astoria and Cathy Windsor of Rushville; two sons, Alan Cox and Arlan Cox, both of Astoria; two brothers, Lawrence (and Robbie) Howell of Durango, Colo., and Ray Howell of Ipava; three sisters, Anna Hammett of Urbana, Ohio, and Florence Burgett and Betty Gilmore, both of Havana; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

A member of United Auto Workers Local 974, he worked at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria for 25 years.

He was a member of the Astoria Fire Department for 23 years.

He was a member of Astoria Church of Christ in Astoria.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria with Collis Trone officiating. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. tonight. Burial will be in Astoria Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Astoria Fire Department or to his church.
