Edna Johns Hilst

Edna E. Johns Hilst, 84, of Hayesville, N.C., formerly of Canton, died at 9:25 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Britt Haven Nursing Home in Franklin, N.C.

She was born March 2, 1917, in Rushville, a daughter of Wallace and Esther Viola Green Leezer. She married Sandford E. "Edd" Johns on May 21, 1938, in Keokuk, Iowa. He died Sept. 15, 1959. She married Jesse "Hap" Hilst on Aug. 28, 1967, in Canton. He died in February 1980.

She also was preceded in death by one son, Ralph E. Johns, one grandson and one brother.

Surviving are one son, Frank (and Judith) Johns of Hayesville; two stepsons, Duane (and Phyllis) Hilst of Pekin and Dean (and Carol) Hilst of Tulsa, Okla.; two daughters, Janice (and Keith) Abbadusky of Fairview and Sandra (and Larry) Boyer of Decatur; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rollin Leezer of Lewistown and Richard Leezer of Cuba; and three sisters, Ada Wilson of Astoria, Helen Wilcoxen of Canton and Betty Strong of Rushville.

She was the grill cook at Louie's Dairy Castle in Canton for 14 years and then worked in housekeeping at Graham Hospital in Canton for 11 years.

She was a member of Fairview Rebekah Lodge 243.

Services were held Saturday at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton with Rev. Matthew Keith officiating. Burial was in White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.

Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Assembly of God Church in Hayesville or the Susan G. Komen Breast Center.
