John Arthur Hammond, 77, of Table Grove, died at 1:13 a.m. Friday, July 11, 1997, at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born Jan. 18, 1920, in New Salem Township, McDonough County, the son of John Urban and Nina Chapman Hammond. He married Wanda Herndon on July 21, 1943, in Knox County. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Richard M. Hammond of Deerfield and John H. Hammond of Fairfax, Va.; one sister, Gertrude Hammond Bean of Table Grove; and three grandchildren.

One infant sister preceded him in death.

He graduated from Bradley Polytechnic Institute in 1940 and attended the University of Iowa College of Law. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving as a private. In 1942, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps. He was an instructor in air defense radar in Panama and the United States until 1945. He was a farmer in McDonough County and a member of the American Legion for 45 years. He was a trustee of Adair Fire Department and Pennington Point Cemetery Association.

Cremation has been accorded and private graveside services were held Monday at Pennington Point Cemetery in New Salem Township with Rev. Jim Comstock officiating. Arrangements were by Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home, Macomb.

Memorials may be made to Pennington Point Cemetery in care of the U.S. Postal Service in Adair.
