Wanda Hammond

Wanda Hammond, 96, died Oct. 17, 2014, at Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb.

She was born July 1, 1918, in Macomb, the daughter of Orville O. and Clara Westlake Herndon of Adair. She married Army Lieutenant John A. Hammond of Table Grove on July 21, 1943, in Galesburg.

Surviving are two sons, John H. (and Karen) and Richard M. (and Maureen); and three grandchildren.

She graduated from Adair High School, attended MacMurry College in Jacksonville and received her RN at University of Iowa, specializing in psychiatric nursing.

After World War II, they lived briefly in Macomb and then moved to the Hammond family farm between Adair and Table Grove where they lived together until John’s death in 1997.

She served on the first Board of Directors of McDonough District Hospital, assisted with community blood bank collections and helped in preserving items of local historical interest such as the Adair bandstand.

She and her husband sold furniture and other items at Herndon & Co., located in the old Herndon Brothers Hardware store in Adair.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. Burial will be at Pennington Point Cemetery with a private ceremony.
