Jessie Hughes Dies At Age 90

Jessie H. Hughes, 90, of Lewistown, formerly of Astoria, died at 7:56 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 1990, at Graham Hospital's Extended Care Unit in Canton.

She was born June 9, 1900, in Waterford Township, Fulton County, a daughter of James and Sarah France Hardin. She first married Glenn D. Smithe in 1918. He died in 1958. She married M. W. Hughes in 1963. He died in 1965.

One son, Glenn H. Smith, one great-granddaughter, one brother and two sisters also preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Jacquetta Kolesar of Morton; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the former EUB Church in Astoria and the Lewistown Historical Society. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Royal Neighbors and had helped with the Spoon River Scenic Drive for several years.

During World War II, she worked at the former Camp Ellis Military Base in Fulton County. She later worked at the Astoria Argus-Searchlight newspaper and the Galesburg State Research Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Henry Memorial Home in Lewistown with Rev. Terry Vance officiating. Burial was in Astoria Township Cemetery.
