Solomon Emig, Canton Dies From Burns

Solomon (Sol) Emig, 73, of Canton, a former Astoria resident, died in the Graham hospital Friday evening following an accident at his home Friday morning in which he was seriously burned.

Mr. Emig, who was home alone, was emptying paper from a trash can into the furnace when his clothing ignited. He was taken to the hospital after he telephoned his daughter at her place of employment.

Born in Astoria, July 31, 1880, a son of Henry and Rebecca Emig, he was married in Vermont to Bessie Elgin, who preceded him in death in 1918. He was again married on Dec. 14, 1921 in Astoria to Mary Mendenhall, who survives.

Other survivors are three sons, Edward Emig of Lewistown, Ronald of Peoria, and Charles, with the U.S. Army in New York City; five daughters, Mrs. Catharine Schisler, of Swan Creek, Mrs. Della Wright of Vermont, Mrs. Margaret Beldon of Canton, Mrs. Lulu Vogel of Manito and Miss Shirley Emig, at home, 28 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, a brother, Edward Emig of Detroit, Mich., and three sisters, Mrs. Roman Little and Mrs. Ella McMullen, both of Astoria, and Mrs. Mable Wherley, Table Grove.

He had lived in Canton 24 years and retired from work at the International Harvester Company, Canton Works three years ago. He was a member of the Astoria Christian church.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Murphy Memorial Home, Canton. Burial was in Astoria cemetery.
