Sidney C. DeWitt, 76, of Browning died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown.

He was born Nov. 5, 1927, in Beardstown, a son of Sidney Charles and Stella Mikesell DeWitt. He married Betty F. Oakman Struble on June 3, 1966, in Rushville. She died Jan. 2, 2004.

He also was preceded in death by five sisters.

Surviving are three sons, Mike of California, and Dan and Steve (and Joann), both of Texas; one daughter, Kathy (and Bob) Niestradt of Shelbyville; one stepson, John Struble of Browning; three stepdaughters, Linda (and David) Severns of Browning, Carol (and Bernard) Walters of Mason City and Joan (and Robert) Hamlin of Bartonville; two brothers, Jack (and Pauline) of Springfield and Tom (and Judy) of Beardstown; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A World War II and Korean War veteran, he served in the Navy for nine years aboard the USS Pigeon and the USS Casa Grande. He attained the rank of quartermaster third class.

He had worked for several years for Burlington-Northern Railroad, Laborers Local 165 in Peoria and American Water Co., where he retired on Jan. 1, 1992, after 10 years.

He was a member of Central Christian Church in Browning.

Services were held Sunday at his church with Jeff Moore officiating. Burial was in Browning Cemetery. Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown was in charge of arrangements.
