James “Wendell” Copes, 83, of Rushville died at 11:10 p.m. May 13, 2007, at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Mo.
He was born Feb. 9, 1924, in Vermont, a son of Clinton and Nettie Schroeder Copes. He married Lydia Dohner on May 14, 1950, in Vermont.
Surviving are one daughter, Sandy (and Jeff) Belden of Columbia, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Wayne; and one sister, Mildred Copes.
He served in World War II with the U.S. Navy.
He was a 1942 graduate of Vermont High School. He farmed all his life, retiring in spring 2006.
He was a member of Schuyler American Legion and Illinois Farm Bureau.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Wood Funeral Home in Rushville with Rev. Mike Cahill officiating. Burial will be in Vermont Cemetery with military rites conducted. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
