Charles "Leo" BurksCharles “Leo” Burks, 87, died Nov. 20, 2020, in Richland, Wash.

He was born Oct. 29, 1933, in McCredie, Mo., a son of Samuel Owen Burks and Edith Moore Burks. He married Nancy “Delores” Tracy in 1961. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Julie and Lisa; two brothers, Frank and Russell; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob, Don, Bill and Walter.

The boys were raised predominantly by their mother during a time of great scarcity, relying on the generosity of family and community to make ends meet. During his youth he worked odd jobs, bailing hay for Ipava area farmers and selling newspapers at Camp Ellis.

He graduated from VIT High School in 1952.

Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany and France where he worked in microwave radio communications. After his military service he joined several of his brothers and mother who had relocated to Richland, Wash. The Burks Brothers eventually owned several Texaco and Conoco stations in that area. Some of them, including Leo, later went into the apple business and owned several acres of apple orchards.

A memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 4, 2020, at Einan’s at Sunset in Richland, Wash.
