Virgil O. Batterton, 85, of Galesburg died at 5:02 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital.

He was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Enid near Havana, a son of Arley Lee and Marvel Brainard Batterton. He married Margaret Imogene Kimmel on Nov. 17, 1945, in Ipava. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Carole Batterton of Galesburg; and one sister, Evelyn (and Claire) Thomas of Table Grove.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

A World War II Army veteran, he served in a field artillery unit in France and Germany. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2257 and Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.

He worked as an assembler and supervisor at Gale Products/Outboard Marine Corp. for 36 years, retiring in September 1981.

He was a member of the Senior Bowling League.

He was a member and deacon at First Christian Church.

Services were held Tuesday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel with Revs. Greg and Martha Jean Fitch officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Galesburg, where military honors were accorded by his American Legion post.

Memorials may be made to his church, the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
