Joe W. Burgett, 87, of Vermont, died Monday, Dec. 11, 1995, at 4:05 a.m. at the Washington Christian Nursing Village in Washington, Ill.

He was born on July 19, 1908, in Ipava, a son of Earl and Hazel Hummel Burgett. He married Velma Smith on July 23, 1927. She died March 13, 1992. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Ken Burgett and one sister, Virginia Justus.

He is survived by two daughters, Peggy Ilene Leeper of Eugene, Ore. and Carolyn Kay Bulmer of Washington; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, John Burgett of Quincy; three sisters, Donna Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lucille Gorey of Davenport, Iowa and Irma Atkins of Canton.

He was a Navy veteran of WWII, and a member and Past Master of Vermont Lodge 116 AF&AM and a 50-year member of the lodge. He was also a member of Carroll-Rankin American Legion Post #26 of Vermont, a member of Fulton County Voiture #812 40 et 8 and a member of the Illinois Township Officials Association. He was road commissioner of Vermont Township for 45 years.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Kost Memorial Home in Vermont with Rev. Clint Palmer officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Vermont Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by his legion post.

Memorials may be made to the Carroll-Rankin American Legion Post #26 of Vermont.
