John Burgett, 81, formerly of Vermont, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.

He was born May 23, 1917, in Ipava, a son of Earl and Hazel Hummel Burgett.

Surviving are three sisters, Irma Atkins of Canton, Lucille Gorey of Davenport, Iowa, and Donna Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

A World War II Army veteran, he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a member of Carroll-Rankin American Legion Post 26 in Vermont.

Graveside services were held Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lewistown with Rev. Tim Gilliland officiating. Military rites were accorded at the service by his American Legion post. Arrangements were by Kost Memorial Home, Vermont.
