Ulysses Bishop Of Lewistown Dies

Ulysses R. “Less” Bishop, 69, of 1015 N. Cedar, Lewistown, died at 9:58 a.m. Sunday, May 13, 1990, at Graham Hospital’s extended care unit in Canton.

He was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Sheldons Grove, a son of Jess and Lena Kollenberger Bishop. He married Eleanor Jean Groff on Nov. 8, 1941, in Bowling Green, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Carol) Huff of East Peoria and Mrs. Peggy Stanek of Davenport, Iowa; four brothers, Leland of Lewistown, Gerald of Salinas, Calif., Delbert of Urbana, Ohio, and Darrell of Ward, Ark.; six sisters, Mrs. Hazel Brown and Mrs. Lola Jean Kline, both of Lewistown, Mrs. Grace Putt and Mrs. Twila Whitehead, both of Canton, Mrs. Karen Serwacki of Indianapolis and Mrs. Louise Hendren of Moberly, Mo.; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Adelia Pollitt, four brothers and two sisters.

He worked for the former Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad for 23 years, and later was employed by Caterpillar Inc. for 15 years, retiring as a laborer in 1982. He also served as chief of the Bryant Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

He was a member of the Illinois Street Christian Church in Lewistown, Lewistown Masonic Lodge No. 104, and the Skirt and Shirt Square Dance Club in Canton.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. this morning at Henry Memorial Home in Lewistown with Rev. Barbara Short officiating. Burial will be in Maryville Cemetery, Bryant.

Masonic services were held Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Spoon River Hospice Association.
