Herschel Briney Dies At Age 71

Herschel Briney, 71, of Astoria, was dead on arrival at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 1980, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

Mr. Briney was born July 16, 1909, in Hickory Twp., Schuyler Co., the son of John and Charlotte Shaw Briney.

He was a retired farmer and attended the Assembly of God Church. He was a member of the Astoria Lodge 100 AF&AM, Springfield Consistory AASR, and Ansar Shrine of Springfield. He served on Hickory and Browning School Board for 12 years, the Browning Church Board for 12 years, was a member of the Board of Directors of Culbertson Memorial Hospital for six years, and was a Hickory Twp. Cemetery Trustee.

He married Clyde Anna Phillips on Dec. 29, 1929. He later married Beulah Stambaugh on Sept. 8, 1956 in Sheldons Grove Methodist Church.

Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Shirley Ann Harbin of West Minister, Calif., Mrs. Arlene Hollis of Wichita, Kan., and Mrs. Dixie Skiles of Des Moines, Ia.; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Wilburn of Rushville and Ralph of Astoria; and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Criser of Galesburg, Mrs. Esther Chu of Claremont, Calif., and Mrs. Evelyn Thurston of Weems, Va.

He was preceded in death by one son, John Rodney and one brother, Harold.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rushville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jonathan Hollis and Rev. Gary Bass officiating. Burial was in Sheldons Grove Cemetery. Masonic services were conducted by the Astoria Lodge 100 AF&AM.
