Rev. John R. Bates Of Browning Dies

Rev. John R. Bates, 92, of Browning, a retired Methodist minister, died at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1976, at Culbertson Hospital in Rushville.

Rev. Bates was born on July 31, 1883, in Browning, the son of William J. and Matilda Reno Bates. He married Elva Addie Bollinger on Apr. 9, 1912, in Peoria. She died on Sept. 4, 1966.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. George (Betty) Stambaugh of Browning and Mrs. Oliver (Garnet) Briney of Peoria; one son, Kermit Bates of Chico, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Blanche Ryan of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. He was preceded in death by one daughter.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at the United Methodist Church in Browning with Collis Trone officiating. Burial was in the Browning Cemetery.
