MAXINE (GROFF) AMES

Maxine Ames

Maxine Ames, 82, of Louisville, Ky., formerly of Ipava, died at 3:18 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville.

She was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Ipava, a daughter of Ralph and Bessie Shawgo Groff. She married Ernest Wendell Ames on Aug. 7, 1939, in Palmyra, Mo. He died Jan. 22, 1975.

She also was preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Ames; one granddaughter; and three brothers, Melvin, Maurice and Herman Groff.

Surviving are two sons, Jerry (and Nancy) of Louisville and Donald "Eddy" (and Linda) of LaGrange, Ky.; one daughter, Dixie Russell of Chandlerville; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Vilda Berry of Urbana, Ohio, and Betty Frank of Galesburg.

During World War II, she was the manager of the post exchange at Camp Ellis in Ipava. She also worked at Camp Grant in Rockford and was a caregiver for 10 years.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Chandlerville.

Graveside services were held Monday at Ipava Cemetery with Rev. Mike Stroh officiating. Shawgo Memorial Home in Ipava was in charge of arrangements.
